Classic drama directed by John Cassavetes and starring John Marley, Gena Rowlands and Lynn Carlin. After 14 years of marriage, upper-middle-class couple Richard and Maria Forst (Marley and Carlin) are finally on the cusp of separation. Their marriage has long been an empty union between two people with various problems and no interest in discussing them with each other. Richard declares his intention to formally divorce Maria and retreats into the arms of Jeannie Rapp (Rowlands), an escort he has already fallen for. Maria joins her married friends for a night out and brings a handsome young man named Chet (Seymour Cassel) back to her home. With their separation having been completed at long last, both Richard and Maria have nothing left to distract them from facing up to their own personal lives.
