All six episodes of the BBC miniseries based on the Vikram Seth novel set in India in 1951. Following her sister's marriage, Lata Mehra (Tanya Maniktala) is put under increasing pressure to have a partner and her mother, Rupa (Mahira Kakkar), does all she can to select the appropriate person. As literature student Lata continues to excel with her studies she finds herself becoming more independent and less inclined at the thought of settling down. However, when she falls in love with fellow student Kabir (Danesh Razvi) she knows her family will never approve because he is a Muslim. Meanwhile, Laka's friend Maan Kapoor (Ishaan Khattar) continues to rebel against his father, Mahesh (Ram Kapoor), who is a respectable politician.
