Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney and Anne Baxter star in this adaptation of Somerset Maugham's famous philosophical novel. American WWI pilot Larry Darrell (Power) grows increasingly delusional at the slaughter he witnessed during his years of service and struggles to integrate into the life of high society that his fiancee Isabel Bradley (Tierney) is part of. As they break off their engagement Larry travels to Paris and then India where he seeks enlightenment away from the values of modern society. Ten years later, Larry is reunited with Isabel and his former friends, all of whom appear to have suffered in some way.
