Vanessa Redgrave and Jim Broadbent star in this TV adaptation of the classic novel by L.P. Hartley. As a teenage boy, Leo (Jack Hollington), is invited to a wealthy school friend's family estate one afternoon and is reluctantly drawn into a love affair between his friend's sister, Marion (Joanna Vanderham), who is engaged to be married, and her secret lover. Marion uses Leo as a go-between, sending messages to local farmer Ted Burgess (Ben Batt). Despite feeling like he is betraying her fiance, Leo continues to act as the messenger and discovers more about the attraction between men and women along the way. Now an old man, Leo (Broadbent) recounts the story of the love triangle after discovering his diary that he wrote when he was 13-years-old.
